FROMM Syrah Fromm Vineyard 2020
2020 was an excellent vintage for Syrah. We selected 4 barrels to make up our “Single Vineyard” wine, predominantly from our original 1992 plantings, which showed an extra level of finesse and slightly finer and more persistent tannin support. 

This understated, subtle and complex wine shows already excellent integration, combining dark berry fruit and spice aromas with lifted floral notes, typical for young cool-climate Syrah. Still somewhat shy in its youth, it has everything there to fully develop in the next few years into a graceful and expressive Syrah as we have seen from similar great vintage in the past.

A stunning rendition, showing Black Doris plum, blackberry, rich floral, tar and nutmeg nuances, followed by a concentrated palate displaying outstanding depth and length. Estate-grown in the Wairau Valley, Marlborough, hand-harvested from mature vines, and co-fermented with a splash of Viognier (3 per cent), the very elegant 2020 vintage (*****) is a rare red (only four barrels were produced). Certified organic, it was aged for two years in seasoned oak barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.  Dark and youthful in colour, with a fragrant, still fresh bouquet, it is mouthfilling, with strong, vibrant, plum and black pepper flavours, earthy and savoury notes adding complexity, and a finely poised, very harmonious, long finish.  Best drinking 2028+.

Fantastic fragrant bouquet with a varietal core of dark plums and baked raspberry folded between complexities from barrel maturation and an earthy tilled soil quality. Some spice and soil attributes then dark violet suggestions. Firm and dry, taut and youthful, a flourish of flavours from fruit and nut qualities from the barrel. There’s a back bone of acidity with an abundance of firm ripe tannins adding texture and foundation. A fine example that will develop and age well with best drinking from 2025 through 2035.

A really engaging and delicious meaty accent to the dark cherries, grilled thyme and peppercorns, with a hint of dried flowers. Medium to full body on the palate with tangy spices and round, fleshy cherries. Bone-dry in terms of the sweetness of the fruit with a creamy, seamless rounding of tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

It’s brooding and engaging on the nose showing dark fruit richness, violet, tar, game and warm spice aromas, followed by a concentrated palate that’s plump and flavoursome. Pure, ripe and varietal with distinctive floral and mineral scents, black cherry and dark raspberry. These ideas are mirrored on the palate with surrounded by a firm textue of fruit then some wood tannins, youthful acid topline and complexity from baking spices and lees and earthy mineral qualities. Delicious, fresh, very new still and will continue to age and develop if you can be patient. Lengthy complex finish with best drinking from late 2024 through 2030+.

This is a beautiful and charming Syrah, offering a gentle, spicy nose combined with some well-integrated, subtle oak. The palate is equally delicate and refined with lovely balance and texture.

 FROMM Syrah Fromm Vineyard 2016
Our Fromm Vineyard Syrah is grown solely at our ‘Home Vineyard’ in the Wairau Valley with a large proportion of the wine made up of fruit from our oldest (now 27-year-old) vines.  A great example of a well made cool climate Syrah that processes power without precluding finesse. Rosemary marinated lamb backstraps with a nice char from the BBQ have certainly met their match here.
